Age and Sex

Overview

Throughout the American Community Survey, data is broken down by age and sex. However, there are a few tables that are focused directly on these basic statistics.

The American Community Survey includes a question that intends to capture current sex; there are no questions about gender, sexual orientation, or sex at birth. It is recommended to not substitute the word “gender” for “sex” when using this data.

All data sources are from the American Community Survey unless otherwise noted.

Why It's Important

Age and Sex
  • Distribution of youth by sex
  • Distribution of youth by age
  • These indicators could help identify specific segments of the population who could benefit from additional funding or programmatic support. For example, areas with higher concentrations of 10-14 year olds could benefit more strongly from an after-school program that is focused on serving middle-schoolers.

Male Youth
  • Distribution of male youth by age
  • We also incorporated male youth population into the profiles to help support the My Brother’s Keeper initiative launched by President Obama in 2014. This initiative was meant to address the persistent opportunity gaps boys and young men of color face and to ensure all young people can reach their full potential. This data could help identify areas where there are high concentrations of male youth, as well as any demographic characteristics that may be unique to this specific group.

Methodology

B01001: Sex by Age: provides the estimated count of men and women in age buckets, mostly of five years (e.g. 25 to 29 years, 30 to 34 years). Around the later teens and in the 60’s the brackets are of differing sizes, including a column for just 20-year-olds and another for just 21-year-olds.)

B01002: Median Age: provides the estimated median age for all people in the given geography, and then also for males and females separately.

B01003: Total population: a single column with the estimated total population for the geography. This value is the same as the first column of B01001 for a given geography.
